Knee X-Ray Report: Findings, Indications, and Turnaround
AI + musculoskeletal radiologist hybrid intelligence. Routine knee X-ray reads in under 15 minutes. Fracture and effusion findings escalated on call.
- What is a Knee X-Ray?
- A knee X-ray is a plain radiograph of the knee joint, usually acquired in AP and lateral views, with weight-bearing, skyline (patellar) or intercondylar (tunnel) views added when clinically indicated. It is the first-line imaging investigation for bony anatomy, joint space, and alignment.
- How long does a Knee X-Ray report take with 5C?
- In India, 5C Network's hybrid intelligence workflow delivers structured Knee X-Ray reports in an average of 15 minutes, signed off by a musculoskeletal radiology specialist. Emergency cases are prioritised for 15-minute turnaround.
When is a Knee X-Ray ordered?
Knee X-rays are ordered after trauma and falls, for suspected fractures, dislocations, or effusions, and for evaluation of knee pain, stiffness, deformity, or instability. They are also routinely used to grade osteoarthritis, screen for loose bodies, and as a pre-operative baseline before knee arthroscopy or replacement. Soft-tissue injuries such as ACL or meniscal tears typically require an MRI knee for further workup.
How 5C reads a Knee X-Ray
Every Knee X-Ray on the 5C network is read by AI and a board-certified radiologist — never one without the other. Here's the 4-step workflow.
Bionic AI pre-read
Bionic — 5C's radiology AI trained on 3+ billion medical images — pre-reads the x-ray and flags findings for the radiologist's attention.
- medial and lateral joint space narrowing (osteoarthritis grading)
- osteophytes and marginal lipping
- subchondral sclerosis and cyst formation
- patellar fractures
- tibial plateau fractures (Schatzker patterns)
- distal femoral fractures
- lipohaemarthrosis (fat-fluid level on horizontal-beam lateral)
- chondrocalcinosis (meniscal and hyaline cartilage)
- intra-articular loose bodies
- patella alta / baja and patellofemoral malalignment
Radiologist read
An NMC-registered musculoskeletal radiology specialist from 5C's 400+ radiologist network reviews every image, validates or corrects AI findings, and adds clinical context.
- NMC-registered, medico-legally valid in India
- Subspecialty-trained for knee
- Available 24/7 across India time zones
QA & peer review
Critical and complex Knee X-Ray reads get a second-radiologist review. Random sampling across all reads supports continuous QA.
- Double-reading on critical findings
- Audit trail for medico-legal use
- NABH-aligned escalation protocol
Structured report
Signed PDF report delivered to your PACS / RIS / email in an average of 15 minutes from the time of acquisition.
- Structured findings + impression
- 15-minute SLA for emergencies
- Critical-finding phone escalation
What's in a 5C Knee X-Ray report
A standard 5C Knee X-Ray report is structured to be readable by the referring clinician, the hospital admin reviewing TAT, and any auditor checking NABH compliance.
Clinical history
Mechanism of injury or symptoms, side of complaint, prior knee surgery or trauma, and the referring clinician's specific question.
Technique
Views obtained (AP, lateral, weight-bearing, skyline, tunnel), patient positioning, and any limitations such as inability to extend or bear weight.
Comparison with prior imaging
Comparison with any prior knee X-ray, CT or MRI available, with explicit note of new fractures, progression of arthritis, or hardware-related changes.
Findings
Systematic review of femur, tibia, fibula and patella, joint spaces, alignment, soft tissues, and suprapatellar recess for effusion. Negative findings stated explicitly where clinically relevant.
Impression
One-line summary — for example, Kellgren-Lawrence grade of osteoarthritis, fracture pattern with displacement, or "no acute bony injury".
Recommendations
Suggested next steps — MRI knee for suspected internal derangement, CT for complex tibial plateau fractures, or orthopaedic referral for surgical planning.
Critical findings escalation
Acute fractures, dislocations and large lipohaemarthrosis are phoned to the referring clinician within the 15-minute SLA.
