Top radiology departments in India for MD and DM training (2026)

Where you train shapes the radiologist you become. This list compares 12 of India’s leading radiology departments on things you can check yourself: national ranking, MD seats, and the super-speciality training each one offers. Every number links to its source.

Quick answer (November 2026)

By the NIRF 2025 medical ranking, AIIMS New Delhi, PGIMER Chandigarh and CMC Vellore lead. For neuroradiology, look at SCTIMST, NIMHANS, AIIMS and PGIMER. For cancer imaging, Tata Memorial Centre has the broadest fellowship track. For a large MD cohort, CMC Vellore takes 24 residents a year, and PGIMER is the only institute offering DM Musculoskeletal Radiology.

How we built this list

We did not score departments on reputation or on our own opinion. Each entry uses only public data from the regulator, the exam body or the institution itself:

  • National ranking: the NIRF 2025 medical ranking, the latest edition. The list is ordered by it; departments outside the NIRF top 50 follow, alphabetically.
  • MD Radio-diagnosis seats: the NMC PG seat matrix for 2026–27. AIIMS, PGIMER, JIPMER, NIMHANS and SCTIMST admit separately, so their figures come from AIIMS exam notices or the institute.
  • Super-speciality training: DM, PDCC and fellowship seats from the INI-SS seat position for January 2027, the NMC matrix and the departments’ own pages.

Where an institution describes itself as the “first” or “only”, we say so in its words rather than stating it as fact. 5C Network publishes this page; no institution paid to be included. Seat numbers change every admission cycle, so confirm with the institute before you apply.

How to choose

  • For MD, look at caseload and cohort size. A large cohort at a busy hospital means more scans, more night duties and more seniors to learn from. CMC Vellore, Tata Memorial and Madras Medical College have some of the largest intakes.
  • For a subspecialty, follow the DM and fellowship seats. Neuroradiology training is concentrated at a handful of institutes; interventional radiology is more widely spread; MSK as a DM exists only at PGIMER.
  • Ask residents, not brochures. Supervision, case variety and protected reporting time vary more between departments than any ranking shows.
